Operation Codname: Homeworld

PRIMARY THEATER OF OPERATION:
Planet: Tau Ceti IV, Chaos March
Terrain: Radiated Wasteland
Time: Day

SECONDARY THEATER OF OPERATION:
Planet: Sheratan, Chaos March
Terrain: Grasslands / Marsh / Waterfront / Urban
Time: Day

NARRATIVE:

MechWarriors, over the past eighteen months, the Legionnaires have had everything we've ever had - and everything we've ever known - taken away from us. The Word of Blake stole our home. The Order of the New Republic betrayed us and robbed us of many of our comrades. The Crayven Corporation stole our identities, made us exiles, and has been relentlessly pursuing us. Since then, we have been on the run - and for far too long. I believe it's high time for us to stop running - and to reclaim that which is rightfully ours.

To put it bluntly, in order to achieve this, we're going to need to take out the Crayven Corporation. Charles Maxwell has recently been in contact with a former colleague of his - one Ron 'Butch' Harris, an intelligence analyst, who has spoken of an internal rebellion underway within the company. The revolt is being led by both Harris and Colonel Taylor Reese, who some of you may remember as the commander of the stolen battleship Astrid, whose timely arrival at Kittery allowed us to continue breathing for a little while longer. The Colonel's band of rebels have been attempting to build up a substantial enough battleforce to remove General Caswell from power - by force, if necessary - and install Harris as the new head of the Crayven Corporation. Harris has promised that if this attempt succeeds, he will compel the Corporation to restore the identities of the disavowed Legionnaires and return their liquidated assets to us - including the Camelot compound in Gellen's Heights.

Harris has determined that the best way to kill the snake that is the Crayven Corporation is by cutting off its head. Bounty Hunter Sam Grisham has come into some damning evidence concerning a number of unscrupulous and highly damaging business transactions conducted by General Caswell. As a number of the transactions directly affected the well-being of Gellen's Heights and its populance, both Mister Grisham and Charles Maxwell believe that if this information is brought to the attention of Sheratan's governor, Julia Ravenswood, the planetary legislature will suspend the company's rights to operate pending a full investigation. Grisham believes the information is damning enough that it will result in Caswell's expulsion from the company. Sam and Charles have taken a transport to Sheratan to set these events in motion.

However, we have another problem. According to transmissions from Ron Harris, Caswell has already deployed a battleforce to take the Astrid and shut down the rebellion. The General himself is aboard the lead ship, an Agamemnon-class battlecruiser he's gotten his hands on - how he managed to do so is irrelevant. The vessel is the FWLS Troy, and will be escorted by the DropShips Profit and Dreams of Avarice II - both Overlord-class DropShips. Harris' contacts within the company have also advised that Caswell has determined the location of the Astrid, and that, given the speed at which the floatilla was mobilized, he will intercept the rebels' battlecruiser in seventy-two hours.

Colonel Reese has set the Astrid down on the surface of Tau Ceti IV to make the vessel more difficult to find, and to render the advanced weapons aboard the Vengeance and its escorts largely useless. Additionally, the huge battles raging across the world's surface will create quite an obstacle for Caswell's forces to wade through. However, discovery is inevitable, and Reese and Harris have dug in as best they can. Unsupported, however, they will not survive the encounter. They've asked us help raise a defense.

I know we're short on equipment, and that Tau Ceti IV is definitely a world of difficult memories for all of us, but if this campaign is successful, we stand to reclaim so very much. We all deserve it.

I've included an objective in this briefing regarding the salvage of resources from our old garrison at the Kauffman Aerospace Complex. Though I'm fairly certain it's been picked clean, there may be some equipment there we can use.

A final note: beware of radiation. The nuclear fallout on Tau Ceti IV is still very high.

MISSION OBJECTIVES:

I. Rendezvous with the C.S.V. Astrid at Tau Ceti IV.

II. Make planetfall on Tau Ceti IV. Salvage what resources and equipment are left at the Kauffman Aerospace Complex.

III. Defend the C.S.V. Astrid. Eliminate General Caswell's battleforce with extreme prejudice.

IV. Rendezvous with operatives Grisham and Maxwell at Sheratan.

V. Reclaim Camelot.

FORCE COMPOSITION:

CRAYVEN SECURITIES INCORPORATED:

Aerospace:
- FWLS Troy (Agamemnon-class heavy cruiser)

- C.S.V. Profit (Overlord A3 Escort Conversion)

- C.S.V. Dreams of Avarice II (Overlord-Class Dropship)

BattleMechs: The following force composition is conjecture and is based on unconfirmed intelligence reports

Ares Lance:

Ares-1: General Ryan Caswell: Mad Cat MK-II
Ares-2: Major Arcturus Kensington: Fafnir FNR-5
Ares-3: Captain Hugo Martinez: CP-CS-A Cyclops
Ares-4: Lieutenant Richard Baker: RVN-CS-A1 Raven

Scorpio Lance:

Scorpio-2: No Pilot Data Available: MC2-CS-A Mad Cat
Scorpio-3: No Pilot Data Available: Mad Cat

Talon-2: No Pilot Data Available: Warhawk
Talon-3: No Pilot Data Available: Timber Wolf
Talon-4: No Pilot Data Available: Mad Dog
Talon-5: No Pilot Data Available: Hunchback IIC

THREAT REPORT:

Extremely heavy. In addition to environmental hazards posed by the toxic atmosphere of Tau Ceti IV, as well as the heavy fighting between Word of Blake and liberationist forces, the Crayven Securities forces should not be regarded lightly. General Caswell is rumored to be fielding two lances, as well as a third grouping of Clan BattleMechs organized as a star. Although there has been no indication that any Clan pilots will be participating in the engagement, Crayven MechWarriors are highly adept and skilled soldiers, and will use every means at their disposal to ensure victory. General Caswell himself is allegedly planning to lead the assault on the Astrid personally.

Planetary Legate: Narthrus Vadaklanit

OVERVIEW:

Originally known as Tau Ceti IV, the first inhabitable world seen by human eyes beyond the Terran solar system was so much like home, its discoverers on the TAS Pathfinder were quick to rename it New Earth when they arrived in orbit in December of 2108. Offering almost everything found on Terra herself, from abundant water supply to deep mineral, chemical, and metal ore deposits, eager colonists and corporate entities alike flocked to this new world. It comes as no surprise, then, that by the peak of the Star League era, New Earth was one of the most heavily industrialized and developed planets in the Terran Hegemony. Five major SLDF contractors set up their headquarters on New Earth, along with such successful enterprises as the New Earth Trading Company (NETC). All five continents—McKenna in the northwest, Lanhold to its east, the massive Neoasia in the south, the island continent of Kellargo, and even the north polar continent of Arctiqua—boasted major cities and heavy industry. Dozens of Castles Brian were set up on New Earth as well, and the Star League even built the famous Combat College of New Earth outside the capital city of Foundation Point, on McKenna. During the Amaris crisis, the college, most of the Castles Brian, all the major factories, and close to half the planet’s largest population centers were destroyed by Amaris troops using every means available when it became clear they could not hold the planet. The world’s gutted infrastructure and war-ravaged environment left the survivors shocked and demoralized, victims of widespread famine and disease—particularly the virulent New Earth Pox. The centuries of decline that followed, despite being under the banner of the wealthy Lyran state, did little to help pull the world out of the ruins, largely due to the continuous raiding and open warfare between the Lyrans and their neighbors. Only the NETC remained through it all, a last vestige of the once-mighty Star League and the only viable large corporation still active on New Earth. Headquartered in Meredith, on Neoasia, the NETC retained its status as a premier transport and trade facilitator until the Word of Blake Jihad erased Meredith from the map along with a host of other New Earth cities, including the capital, New Foundation. As the closest planet to Terra, New Earth’s strategic value makes it the focus of some of the Jihad’s heaviest fighting, which has leveled what industry remained and poisoned the land, air, and seas. The capital of New Earth today is Wiedergeburt, located on Arctiqua’s southernmost tip, where the effects of fallout from both of New Earth’s horrible tragedies has been minimal.

OVERVIEW:

A sparsely inhabited, forest-covered world with thick jungles around the equator, Sheratan is one of the most beautiful planets in the Sarna March. During the invasion, it became one of the most bitterly contested.

The Sheratan Knights, a single regiment of warriors utterly dedicated to the Federated Commonwealth, defended Sheratan from both invading forces and internal rebellions. The planet had suffered a protracted terrorist campaign by various groups set up and funded by the Capellan secret police since the Fourth Succession War, and so the Knights had superior training in dealing with guerrilla-style warfare. When the Capellan Chancellor ordered his agents on Sheratan into action concurrent with the invasion, bombings and mass shootings became commonplace in Sheratan's few large cities. The Sheratan Knights flushed out and destroyed many of the rebel cells, but the vast forests and dense jungles gave the surviving Liao guerrillas plenty of places to hide.

The arrival of the Fist of Mokal, mercenaries in the employ of the Free Worlds League, turned the tables in the Liaoists' favor. Seeing that Sheratan was lightly defended, the mercenaries landed in the capital and proclaimed the world a Capellan possession. The enraged Knights converged on the capital and engaged the Fist in a hit-and-run battle, downing several mercenary 'Mechs. Stunned by the attack, Major William Jeffreys ordered two of his mercenary companies to chase the Sheratan Knights into the forests and hunt them down while the third company held the fort in the capital.

With the aid of the Liao guerrillas, the Fist MechWarriors found and destroyed a battalion of the Knights. The remaining Knights set the forest ablaze, trapping the mercenaries in a burning hell. Major Jeffreys ordered his unit to charge through the flames, but escaped the blaze with only a company left intact. The inferno utterly destroyed the remaining Liao forces. The mercenary company in the capital retaliated by slaying thousands of civilians. When word of the brutal killings got out, the Fist of Mokal's contract was declared null and void and the unit itself was proscribed.

Before departing from Sheratan, the Fist started some fires of its own. Soon, vast tracts of land across the planet were burning out of control. Unable to cope with the crisis, the planetary government collapsed. Various minor nobles and other charismatic leaders rose up to fill the power vacuum, and numerous petty kings are constantly contending with each other for control of the world. Meanwhile, the fires continue to burn, kept at bay only near the cities. Most of the resources that could be used to fight the fires are instead spent on small-scale warfare between the various factions. Smoke from the huge blazes makes the days hazy and the nights unnaturally dark.

The Sheratan Knights remain the only potential stabilizing force on the planet, but they control only the shattered capital city of Gellen's Heights and several square kilometers of surrounding territory. Rebel groups funded by the Capellan Confederation still operate on Sheratan, but the departure of the Marik mercenaries has greatly diminished their power.

Once the emerald jewel in the crown of the Terran Hegemony, Sheratan’s surface was a single landmass blanketed by thick forests, lush jungles, and verdant farmland; dotted by a few, large, landlocked seas. Sheratan’s ruling family, the Grensons, were staunch supporters of Terra’s Cameron family when they assumed leadership of the Terran Hegemony and, later, founded the First Star League. In fact, First Lord Jonathan Cameron married Lady Ludmella Grenson, a connection to the First Star League that Sheratan’s population remains proud of to this day. During the fall of the First Star League, on the order of the Usurper Stefan Amaris, the Grenson family was nearly wiped out for its association with the Camerons. With no hereditary rulers, the Capellan Confederation easily claimed Sheratan after the fall of the First Star League.

Aside from its fertile soil, Sheratan lacks significant resources, so Sheratan’s small population and agriculture were spared most of the ravages of the Succession Wars. When the Federated Suns invaded the Capellan Confederation at the outset of the Fourth Succession War, Sheratan was one of many Capellan worlds near Terra that were cut off from the Confederation and incorporated in the short-lived Tikonov Free Republic. Sheratan reverted to the Federated Commonwealth when an assassin brought an end to the new Tikonov state. The subsqeunt invasion by House Liao troops in the years before the FedCom Civil War left the world ravaged.

"Okay, people, this is it. We've got a contract...so to speak."

I turned off the lights in the briefing room, as I had many times over in the past, the sitrep for Operation: Homeworld flickering into existence on the holoscreen.

"You've heard the rumors - now it's time to weave some fact into the folklore. Yes - it's true...there is an internal revolt taking place within the Crayven Corporation - and it has to do directly with us.

"When our operation at Deneb Kaitos failed, then-section chief Harold Saxon took the opportunity to execute a power play which he knew would ensure his rise to a position of considerable power within the company. By disavowing General Maxwell and his immediate subordinates, Chief Saxon cleared te way for himself to be the next in line for the position of top dog within the company. Our disavowment was just as important to him, and I take full responsibility for it - Saxon apparently felt that there might have been a chance that the company could have fallen into my control were my father to be toppled from his position, and that the best way to eliminate such a risk would be to utterly wipe both my father and his associates from the map.

"It almost worked, too. But Saxon didn't count on the foundation which he had built beneath himself to rise to power to be so unstable. His callous means of achieving his rank, along with his total refusal to attempt a rescue of the missing personnel - Crayven or otherwise - sowed seeds of extreme discontent amongst his staff, and ultimately caused a rift to form, with those who supported a rescue of the Legionnaires and the return of General Maxwell on one side of the fence, and those who chose to follow Saxon's demented ideology on the other. The infighting within the organization began to worsen, and ultimately, a rebellion was born. Inteligence Analyst Ron 'Butch' Harris, and Colonel Taylor Reese, both of whom you may remember as being responsible for our timely rescue at Kittery, are at the forefront of this revolt. They've enlisted the help of many Legionnaire loyalists throughout the company, and have even managed to attract the support and aid of Clan Nova Cat, a longtime client of the Crayven Corporation, who have much to gain from the removal of General Saxon.

"And we've got quite a bit at stake as well. If Saxon can be successfully toppled, the rebels have promised us the restoration of our identities and the return of our base at Gellen's Heights, along with full reparations for any and all damages caused by General Saxon.

"We've got a plan in place to take him out. Sam Grisham and Charles Maxwell have unearthed some damning evidence that implicates General Saxon in several crimes against the city of Gellen's Heights, a revelation that the planetary government of Sheratan will no doubt be highly interested in and disturbed by. We're counting on Governor Ravenswood to shut down the company's operations while a full investigation and inquiry is launched into the matter, effectively cutting Saxon off from his resources in the process. Based on Ravenswood's track record, Grisham believes that when the investigation concludes, Saxon will be removed as head of the company, and most likely jailed. Already, both Sam and Charles are en route to seek an audience with the governor concerning this matter.

"The only problem is, Saxon's been on the warpath for months, attempting to locate his missing battlecruiser, the LosTech C.S.S. Astrid, and unfortunately, he's finally succeeded in locating it, along with Ron Harris, Colonel Reese and her crew. Already, Saxon is en route to Tau Ceti IV, where the Astrid is entrenched on he planet's surface for tactical purposes. He's not alone - he is, in fact, accompanied by the battleforce detailed in your mission briefing, and, according to unconfirmed sources, expected to lead the assault against the rebels personally.

"That's where we come in. Colonel Harris has asked for our assistance in not only holding off, but defeating, Saxon's forces entirely. If Grisham and my father are successful on their end, he won't be able to call for reenforcements. We'll only need to contend with whatever battleforce he has on hand. What we speculate this will consist of is in your briefing packets.

"Once Saxon's been dealt with, the Astrid will escort us to Sheratan, where Harris and his rebels will assume control of the Corporation. From there, the hand-over of the Legionnaires' property will take place, and the restoration of everyone's identities will occur. We will, once again, have a future. Questions?"

A single hand rose from the back of the room.

"Yes?"

"Sir, with all due respect, this all seems awfully convenient. All we have to do is pound Saxon's baddies into the ground, and bam, just like that, we get everything back?"

"I know it may seem farfetched, but for once, yes...it is simply that cut and dry. No tricks, no caveats - just a straightforward defense and espionage Operation. The reality is, there are few within Crayven that support Saxon. Those who oppose him are already in the majority; it is simply a matter of assisting them in surviving long enough to take him out that will permit this situation to end and allow thingsto be set right again. It really is that simple."

"What about tactical assignments, approach vectors, and the like?"

"Good question. The truth of the matter is, there really aren't any. Our primary objective will be to defend the Astrid, and minimize rebel and Legionnaire casualties. It will be at each lance leader's discretion as to how that objective will best be achieved."

I looked around the room, awaiting further queries.

My question was simple and short. "Major, is the Astrid capable of defending itself while grounded in any fashion?"

"Excellent question. The short answer is 'yes,' although the vessel's defensive measures are rather diminished at the moment, and will be more so given that the ship will be grounded. This," I began with a flourish, bringing up a three-dimensional model of the vessel on the holoprojector, accompanied by a short technical readout, "is the Astrid's current loadout of functional weaponry. There are quite a few more emplacements of various types scattered across the ship, but the technicians at Dnepier hadn't finished restoring them all to functionality at the time the ship was stolen by Colonel Reese. Additionally, the vessel lost more emplacements during its engagement with the Agamemnon at Kittery. So - this is what they'll be working with - and understand that only half of the weapons listed will have functional firing arcs while the ship is grounded - those emplacements along the vessel's underside will be obstructed and therefore useless."

I raised my hand after viewing the Astrid's schematics on the holo-screen.

"Yes, Sona?" shot Maxwell.

"I was just wondering what will become of the Crayven Corporation if and when the bad guys are corpses? We can't just leave our rebels hanging. Who will inherit Crayven? I'd bet my rubber thong that the vultures will be circling, and not all of them are right in the head," I added tapping the side of my head with the barrel of my handgun to make the point.

"I was just wondering what will become of the Crayven Corporation if and when the bad guys are corpses? We can't just leave our rebels hanging. Who will inherit Crayven? I'd bet my rubber thong that the vultures will be circling, and not all of them are right in the head."

I nodded, easing down onto a corner of the utilitarian, bare-bones holotable which dominated the presentation floor of the small briefing room, and clasped my hands in my lap before me. A wave of sudden fatigue and weakness had started to overcome me, and I could feel tremors creeping into my appendages. The crew didn't need to see it - not now - nor ever, if I could prevent it.

"A valid question. If all goes according to plan, the rebellion wants to install one of their own - Ron Harris - as the new chief executive officer of the company. Our 'payment' for this operation is riding on the success of this point, as it is only with a corporate head who has the means, as well as the motivation, to assist us that we'll be able to reclaim that which is ours."

A chirp from the holoprojector's podium caught my attention.

"Ladies and gentlemen, it would appear that the rebellion has transmitted their anticipated force compositions. This is a raw AVTPmail, not condensed into briefing format - so I'll put it up on the projector as is. Anyone who needs to come up front here to see should feel free to do so."

With the press of several keys, a three-dimensional image of Harris' latest communique flickered into existence on the holographic display, its lime green text glowing steadily alongside the technicolor graphics of the tactical reports.

Major Maxwell -

Here's the tenative force layout for both Crayven (The Colonel's and Harris's Force) as well as Clan Nova Cat's. Both are a bit light, but adding in the Legionnaires, it should balance out nicely. So, without further ado.

Crayven Corporation

Ravager Lance:
- Ravager Lead: Colonel Taylor Reese - Deimos
- Ravager Two: Major David Hilton - Mad Cat
- Ravager Three: Captain Joseph Stalvey - Linebacker
- Ravager Four: Lieutenant William Dante - Catapult

Sabre Company:
- Commander: General Ron "Butch" Harris (Field Marshall) - Achileus BattleArmor
- Mixed Infantry Platoon (28 including Harris) of BattleArmor
- Unknown Pilot - Bulldog
- Unknown Pilot - Saracen

Dagger Lance:
"Apoc" Nagy - Rifleman
Unknown Pilot - Raven
Unknown Pilot - Hunchback
Unknown Pilot - Centurion

Silencer Lance: (Reserve Lance)
BattleMech - Reserved for Harris - TBD
BattleMech - Hunchback
Unknown Pilot - Bulldog
Unknown Pilot - Catapult

We'd be fielding more, but the fact of the matter is, Colonel Reese's forces have been stretched extremely thin, and much of her equipment was lost or damaged beyond repair at Dnepier. Although, with the addition of Clan Nova Cat's forces and all BattleMech setups of the Legionnaires, we should be able to mount a reasonable defense.

Clan Nova Cat

Claw Star:
Claw Lead: Faina Devalis - Mad Cat
Claw Two: Unknown Pilot - Vulture
Claw Three: Unknown Pilot - Uller
Claw Four: Unknown Pilot - Uller
Claw Five: Unknwon Pilot - Stormcrow

Talon Star:
Talon Lead: AeroTech Pilot - Stuka
Talon Two: AeroTech Pilot - Stuka
Talon Three: AeroTech Pilot - Stuka
Talon Four: AeroTech Pilot - Stuka
Talon Five: AeroTech Pilot - Stuka

“Sir,” I motioned and the Major acknowledged, “will we wait until Saxon’s force has settled on Tau Centauri, or are the Nova Cats going to engage them during descent with their AeroFighter Wing?”

DropShips were almost as vulnerable during descent as they were once settled down—perhaps even more so because an engine failure, even a minor one, could lead to an instable and possibly fatal landing for the crew.

My eye twitched as I did the math, adding the forces of both sides up. My vision was glued to my own lance roster as I did my calculations. There was one member in particular whose name I screamed in my mind as my assessment of the comming battle arrived.

Three lances, two dropships and a warship against a combined seven lances, a company of support and a the Astrid's guns. Hardly seems like a fair fight. What else do they have? That's not Crayven's full force, Saxon should know that he'd need more than just that.

My observations hung in the air, everyone's eyes widened upon the realization that we could not afford a false sense of security. I was deadpan, glaring at the roster.

And what happened to our third lance? Shouldn't we be putting our full weight behind this effort?

“Sir, will we wait until Saxon’s force has settled on Tau Centauri, or are the Nova Cats going to engage them during descent with their AeroFighter Wing?”

I glanced at the tactical display.

"To be frank, Harris hasn't commented on what the AeroFighters' course of action will be once Saxon's battlegroup arrives at Tau Ceti IV. The problem we're faced with as that goes is the amount of third-party combat taking place simultaneous to our own little soire that makes finite planning difficult. There's a substantial number of anti-aircraft emplacements and equipment scattered across the planet that could pose a severe threat both to our fighters and to Saxon's vessels that we can't predict the behavior of. However, with that said, I'm confident that if Harris deems the risk an acceptable one, the fighters will be deployed accordingly."

Captain Desparado interjected.

"Three lances, two dropships and a warship against a combined seven lances, a company of support and a the Astrid's guns. Hardly seems like a fair fight. What else do they have? That's not Crayven's full force, Saxon should know that he'd need more than just that."

I nodded grimly.

"The truth is, we don't know. The information we do have about his forces has come from rumor, speculation, and conjecture based on what little information was able to leak its way out of Crayven's ivory towers. I'm in league with you on this: I think we've grossly underestimated what we'll be facing. With that said, it's better safe than sorry, and that is precisely why we - and the rebels - have pulled out all the guns we could find for this one."

"And what happened to our third lance? Shouldn't we be putting our full weight behind this effort?"

If you'd like to add another lance, draw one up, and I'm happy to add it to the tac overview.

Interruption after interruption after interruption had stalled Kei-teh's death. I had the perfect chance to murder Saburo's brother back on Vivarais, when he and I were alone in the cellar. Sam Grisham had stumbled upon me and had interrupted my work. Since then, I had promised that he would also join Kei-teh – but not until i had disposed of him first. No. I had plans for Kintaru's sweet transition into eternal slumber. I had even planned how I would take his life.

Galatea had provided further interruptions. Kei-teh was usually surrounded by fellow Legionnaires. Whenever he had confronted me or invited me to anything, he was always in the company of his comrades. Every time he came within my eyesight, I could nearly hear his screams of pain and the taste of his blood. The urge often became too great for me to bare. However, I found brief release in the form of self mutilation. The cut-throat blade I had acquired here on Galatea was sharp enough to cut through my flesh with the slightest of ease. Though these cuts were not life threatening, nor were they damaging to my performance as an assassin, they were enough to bring the desperate release I was looking for.

And here I was, sat in the briefing room in yet another interruption. I sat alone in the corner; my mind active with thoughts of Kei-teh's murder.

"There we have it, ladies and gentlemen. Our force composition for Operation Homeworld. Questions? Comments? Concerns?"

As I scanned over the lance arrangements, something caught my eye. I wicked grin stretched across my face. I was in the same lance as my target. What further intrigued me, as I read through the mission brief, was the emphasis on how this mission would essentially be a frantic free for all.

My grin spread wider. What if... I could make his death look like an accident?

"Right then. If there's nothing further, then this meeting is adjourned. We make planetfall in twenty-nine hours. I advise everyone to have their hardware prepped and ready well ahead of time - we don't know what bumps in the road we might encounter between here and there."

A flurry of nods and murmered acknowledgements played across the room. As the cadre dispersed, I leaned against the edge of the holotable. I didn't know how easily I'd be physically able to exit the room, and I certainly didn't want anyone bearing witness to it if I faltered. Fortunately, in due time, the entirety of the staff had made their exit.

All but one.

"That bad, huh?"

"I'm not sure what you're talking about."

John leaned forward on his elbows.

"Please. You're just barely keeping it together. Don't play me for a fool."

I very nearly protested, but the truth was, John had me dead to rights.

"Help me."

John's eyebrow shot up.

"I beg your pardon?"

"Help me. Spot for me. I've got an adrenal booster," I muttered, withdrawing a small autoinjector from a sleeve pocket, "but it's going to take a few minutes to work. I need you to buy me some time until then."

John rose from his seat, and made his way over to me.

"'Buy' you some time?"

I felt the frustration beginning to rise within me. Whether it was due to John's persistent questioning, or due to my plunging adrenaline levels, or both, I couldn't be sure.

"Just - if anyone comes in, start talking to me. Pretend we're reviewing your orders - I don't really care. Anything. I just don't need anyone seeing me like this."

"What's in that syringe?"

I glanced down at the vial, then back at John.

"Cordrazine."

"Cordrazine? That's a cardiac stimulant! Are you hitting that stuff on a regular basis?"

"No," I hesitated, "not really."

"'Not really.' Humor me. How many times?"

"Twice, maybe three times a day."

John's jaw dropped.

"That's insane. You're going make your heart explode if you keep this up."

"I'd prefer that to a slow slide into hell, courtesy of Rissikin's."

"And I'd prefer you didn't die, period!"

I sighed.

"Everybody dies, John. It's only a question of when."

I reclined in the upholstered embrace of my lavish jump seat, its overstuffed cushions contouring themselves to my body like a finely-made dakimakura. Ambient music played softly in my ears, wafting forth from tactfully-concealed acoustic resonators which produced a sound wave so precise and directed that only the listener could hear it. A soft, contented sigh escaped my lips as my eyes closed, blotting out the world around me.

"Don't try to deny that you miss this."

My eyes opened slightly. Sam Grisham sat across the aisle, smirking.

"Miss what?"

The bounty hunter gestured flamboyantly.

"This - all of it. The 'high life,' as it were. Surely you find yourself longing for it."

"I'd be lying if I said I didn't."

"So why all the resistence to making it a part of your world again?"

I glanced around, sipping in the spectacles of opulence and avarice for the first time in many months.

"Because, Grisham - I decided some time ago that being able to live with myself was more important."
