The infirmary is quiet, and smells strongly of antiseptic. A long, central corridor runs the length of the building, branching off to areas marked "O/R" "Triage" "ICU" and "Outpatient." A smaller directory, posted nearby, affords a more comprehensive listing of the services available.

In the waiting room, a nurse clad in World War II-style attire sits at a data terminal, bearly acknowledging your presence. A set of oversized leather chairs surrounding a coffee table, and flanked by dusty artificial plants, afford a haven for those waiting to be attended to.

Upon closer examination, you notice that the holomags spread across the coffee table are all dated "3066."

Fortunately, you need to catch up on your reading.

Walking into the part of the infirmary that was all new and rebuilt, I got a surge of excitement course through my body. I got a sudden urge to run through the whole place laughing and giggling like a school girl, touching everything new and shiny. I restrained the desire though. There was no one present at the time but you never knew who could walk in and it wouldn't be right for anyone to see the head of the medical department acting like a little girl.

I had been working in a very small section of the infirmary. Thankfully there had been nothing critical come in. Garland was the only one that had needed long term care. He was out of the woods as far as healing went. We now had to deal with replacing his arm. He wanted a certain kind of Myomer prosthetic that we didn't have on hand and we were having a hard time finding it. I had a good lead on one. It would require me to travel to pick it up though and I would have to clear it with the Captains. I was sure it would be ok. They wanted Garland back in good physical condition. They were paying for the replacement although Garland had mentioned he wanted some extras, which so far he hadn't explained to me yet, but those would come out of his own pocket. I was sure I was up for whatever he had in mind but I was going to have to get him to go with me to see the arm I had found. I wanted to make sure it was exactly what he wanted.

Lots of things had happened in the past year. The reconstruction of our home had taken awhile and we were all just finishing up some stuff. I was very pleased with what the techs had done with my infirmary. They had built it to my specifications and had added in some extra little things they thought I would like, which I did. The set up was so efficient, there was more rooms to work in and just all in all much better then it was, but it was excellent before, we were able to improve on the design. I just walked through running my hands lovingly over the glistening surfaces so smooth. As bad as the attack on Sheratan was it all turned out ok in the end, except for the lives lost. There was no justifying that.

I quickly checked to see if anyone was around, the impulse to do something crazy overcame me, Taking off my shoes I started at one end of the corridor, running as fast as I could then sliding with my stocking feet all the way to the other end.

Weeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Suddenly the door at the other end came open, too late I couldn't stop myself I slid right into Captain Wolf pretty hard. He caught me but we both went down. He managed to keep himself from falling right on top of me and kept me from falling hard on the floor. A surprised look on his face he spoke.

You ok Doctor?

I .... I uh .... yes. I am so sorry Captain.

He got up, putting his hand out to me, a little bit of a smirk on his face, like he was trying hard not to laugh at me. I took his hand, my face red, he helped me up. Not able to look him in the eye I straightened myself up and tried to apologize again.

I am soooo sorry Captain. I was just um ..... well I was just .......

Enjoying your new infirmary?

Yes!... That's it. I laughed nervously, no one had ever caught me in such an embarrassing position.

Well Doctor I just came in to see how everything turned out. Did the techs do everything to your liking?

Oh yes! and then some. I am very pleased with the out come. I'm going to be hiring more med techs as well. This infirmary will be run close to the scale of a hospital. It will be the best.

Well glad to see you are happy with the outcome. Maybe you are up for giving me a tour?

Oh yes of course Captain. Still blushing from the encounter I gave the Captain a tour of the new infirmary. Taking him over all the new things that were added. At the end of the tour we parted ways. The Captain back to Administration and me off to find Garland to tell him of my find and see if we could get our schedules together to go on the trip

You ok Doctor? I asked as I recovered from being run into the rather giddy looking Dr. Saturina, I tried not to laugh as she began blushing and apologizing repeatedly.

I .... I uh .... yes. I am so sorry Captain.

Yes!... That's it. She laughed nervously, probably extremely embaressed to have been caught playing around like that.

Myself heading towards the Administration level, while the Doctor heading off in the other direction, probably having her own matters to attend to.

“God that feels weird.” I said as the doctor adjusted, poked and prodded my prosthetic forearm. The damn thing had quit on me shortly after our final battle and there were a lot of people with more serious needs than mine, so it had been a few days before the doctor could take a look at it, and he was no cyberneticist.

“I’m sorry, but it’s shot, no pun intended. Well, maybe a little.”

I forced a little laugh, but having this dead weight dangling off my arm wasn’t as fun as it looked.

“Well, with New Avalon under siege and NAIS probably nothing more than a smoking crater, you’re the best I’ve got doc. So, what’s the prognosis?”

The doctor ran his hands over the metal, strange impulses racing to my brain, electrical anomalies that the arm was giving out in its damaged state. I went from feeling bizarre textures to extreme temperatures and, on rare occasion, even pleasure, as much as one could derive from an arm’s comparatively limited nerve endings.

“Could you, uh, stop that? It’s too disconcerting.”

“Sorry, I was just hoping that there was some way to repair the thing, but even if I had the know-how, I doubt that the equipment exists within thirty light years of here. I think you’re going to have to lose it.”

This time, my chuckle wasn’t forced. “Been there, done that. Alright, take her off, but what are my options otherwise?”

“Depends how much time you have.” Said the doctor as began to prepare a laser scalpel which he would use to access the lock buried in the arm which connected flesh to machine, his ultimate goal to disable it allowing the arm to come away clean, leaving nothing more than the lightweight connector to act as an end-cap.

The laser was hot, but it felt like a strange breeze to me—with a slippery texture, like the skin of a fish. I knew the circuits were seriously cooked when I started to taste things in my arm.

“Alright, one second.” A loud click and the arm pulled away, the synthetic flesh having been cut away by the scalpel. We had been careful to discharge the small energy cell in the arm that powered the arm and enabled the micro-laser inside to act as a weapon, lest the laser touch off the electro-fuel contained within. “Well Captain, I can install a wireless transmitter which can connect to your BattleMech allowing you to pilot or… we can grow you a new one. And by we, I mean the clans. And it will take months so you have to think about this long and hard, because you’ll be out of action for that long.”

“How reliable is this wireless technology?”

“Well, Justin Allard managed to become the Solaris champion with is so I think you’ll manage. Then again, he was in a controlled enviroment and you're going to be fighting a war.”

If only I had the time…
