I cast the datapad aside with a brutal flick of my wrist, sending the small noteputer spinning through the zero-gravity environment of the 'Mech bay to collide with a far bulkhead. I couldn't believe it. Wedge...Sona...whoever he was...was being put in command of a lance. I truly didn't know what was worse - the gung-ho clone being given another multi-million-credit war machine to smash to pieces, or the Legionnaire with the worst luck in the universe being allowed command of a lance - in a priceless Masakari, no less! While I hardly considered myself much more of a commander, I certainly had experienced far better results with my fortune than Lourde had - of that, there could be little question. Oak Island, had, certainly, been an exception to the rule - however, I'd moved past that and learned to live in the present.

But what was Major Maxwell thinking??

I simply couldn't wrap my brain around it. Perhaps the man had been out of touch with the goings-on in the trenches in recent months that he wasn't fully aware of what all had transpired - or maybe he really was naive enough to believe that the MechWarrior could get the job done. Either way, it was going to be very interesting. I just hoped that Lourde had at least enough skill to act as an appealing target and draw enough fire away from the rest of the 'Mechs in his lance that we could get the job done - with or without his help.

I slammed a fusion mass canister into the undercarriage of my thirty-five-ton Cougar, and floated up to the cockpit to verify the installation. As I did so, a voice echoed across the bay.

"Corporal Norrington. I would speak with you."

It was Thastus - the Clanner.

"Because, Grisham - I decided some time ago that being able to live with myself was more important." Charles said in genuine tone. I sat back and flashed a quick grin. Perhaps these past weeks of basic living had gotten to Charles after all. Under the surface, there was more to the elder Maxwell then meets the eye. Yes indeed, under that tough ‘executive’ exterior, there was a definable, human quality to the man. However, I wondered at what point in his life he had decided that he wanted to ‘live with himself’. Was it after the tragic death of his wife? Or was it the shocking realisation that his son was going down the same path? Only Charles knew the answer to that question.

I didn’t think a second time about it – the extremely comfortable, executive styled seats gave me a comfortable embrace I couldn’t have felt in an economy seat. I was used to sitting in the ‘cattle’ section on most public transport/establishments. This first class, private treatment was certainly comfortable. One could certainly get used to the high life. Yes, indeed.

“When do we settle down on Sheratan?” I asked. I wanted to make sure I had plenty of time to make myself presentable, as it had been a long time since I had worn a suit. Charles, who was also dressed suitably, lifted his left arm and glanced at his wristwatch.

“Plenty of time yet – enough time to enjoy this music…” he gestured at the unique acoustic sound resonators. I looked at the armrest integrated display and noticed the otherwise hidden option. A quick tap or two on the keyboard brought up the different genres of music I could listen to. The computer even allowed me to tune into the same channel Charles was listening to.

“Fan of the opera, eh Charles?” I asked. As I looked up, I could see the elder Maxwell’s eyes were already closed and relaxed. My voice was presumably downed out by the tranquil sounds the resonators produced. I chuckled to myself and tuned directly into the same channel. The roaring hum of the jump ship was quickly hushed and replaced with the unique music of the opera.

An uneducated man such as myself had little understanding of the lyrics, however the power and emotion in the young, female singer’s voice reminded me of Emily’s. As I closed my eyes, I could almost see her at her bedside, singing wistfully as she looked out of her window. The towering buildings curtained most of her view, but if you sat in just the right position, as Emily could, there was always a patch of bright blue sky that could be seen, peaking between the giant constructs. She had never told me directly, but I knew her dream was to walk amongst the clouds – to no longer be trapped inside her cage like a bird.

“I’ll set you free Emily… no matter what…”

I left the briefing room and as I usually did after a briefing I immediately went to the mechbay to inspect my machine. It was a newer mech, I was used to old InnerSphere models and Clantech but this new Sunder looked promising. It was basically a Nova Cat with about 20 extra tons of heatsinks, a devastating combination of power and control. With our backs against the wall, I had spared no expense to load the relativly new assault mech with a good amount of clan technology. It would take me until the time was rendevousd with the Astrid to replace every power capacitor in my Sunder with upgraded ones that could handle the flow of power the Clantech needed. I busied myself with feverishly tuning my mech while nipping at a bottle of rum. The new mech was fearsome indeed, perhaps moreso than an Atlas, but it wasn't the style of mech I was accustomed to. Being newer it had several newer features and some of the latest engineering benefits that Zanbautou Mechworks had developed but it lacked something that I couldn't quite put my finger on. Something abstract, perhaps it was the impersonality the extra bells and whistles schackled the Sunder with. Less of an organic kenetic feeling and more like the pilot was detatched a bit. I made a mental note to adjust the tension on the myomer fibers whenever I could have a professional take a look but for now, the only way to familiarize myself with it would be in battle. It was usually how these things ended up, a baptism by fire.

Hand me that bottle would ya?

Sona was happy to oblige after taking a swig of rum himself. I wiped the lip of the bottle, an OCD thing of mine. It didn't seem to bother Sona who had graciously asked me for advice in his new assignment of leading a lance of the legionnaires. He had a lot of experience but never in a command position before so I had agreed to share what I could while he worked up my Sunder with me. We strattled the right arm of the Sunder, facing eachother and replacing wiring, transistors, capacitors and anything else that would need a little boost to be able to better accomidate the power needed by clan energy weapons. Sona busily removed anything that looked like it wasn't up to the job and kept it aside in an organized pile next to us and I went back other everything installing stronger components. His diligence was perhaps from his time with the Word of Blake. I thought it was sort of funny how I somehow trusted him more than I did Pheonix. The very people who had been directly responsible for a large tangent in my life and I enjoyed the company of one more than I did the clone of my best friend.

Working in a clockwise motion we went section through section of the armor that we could remove to get to the ciritical systems.

So this is gonna be kinda weird. No leeway for mistakes here. I'm used to alwaya going all out and not holding back so this shouldn't be too much different.

I set the bottle down and picked my spanner back up and using it to crudely beat a transformer coupling into place as Sona began to remove the next section of Ferro Fibberous alloy for us to work on. As I finished replacing all of the removed parts with newer upgrades motion caught my eye and I dropped everything into the arm cavity and grabbed the falling slab of metal, saving it from pinning Sona's legs. He looked astonished but quickly recovered and helped me with the unsecured plating.

That was bigger than I thought it was.

Thats what being a leader is. You're no longer the most important person to you.

I gestured to the bucket of scattered componets and tools that had rattled their way to the bottom of the arm's hollow. It would take several minutes to retrieve everything again.

Even if it means you failing, do what it takes to make your team accomplish its goals.

Sona nodded, absorbing the profound nature of this tiny illustration. This upcomming fight would be dozens of times worse and had infinitely more potential for loss than a small mechbay accident. I sipped the sweet dark rum slowly again, hoping that the full effect of the last few moments had had a great influence over our newest lance leader.

Point of clarification: Charles and Grisham are aboard a luxury liner bound for Sheratan to complete the subterfuge aspect of the assignment; we, on the other hand, are aboard the Dauntless, about to attempt the insane front-line aspect of our Operation.

The weightless haven that had been our JumpShip's parking orbit of Galatea gave way to a hard, shuddering, positive-G environment once again as the mighty vessel throttled away from the planet, pushing forward into the cosmos with a forceful diligence as it plied its way toward the system's jump point. I eased out of the grounding strap I'd slipped my arm into just prior to the first departure bell sounding, and unsteadily found my balance. Several agonizing moments later, I'd administered myself another adrenaline injection, and re-centered myself. I then made my way to the 'Mech bay to begin the process of calibrating my Daishi's systems to the most precise settings I'd ever attuned them to. There was a method to my madness - not only was the nature of this particular operation one of the most crucial - if not the most crucial - we'd encountered to date, the fact of the matter was, my conditiopn was diminished enough that I'd be relying on the Clan BattleMech's integrated targeting and tracking systems far more than I ever had before. It was a dangerous move - generally speaking, the more responsibility a pilot placed on his machine's systems, the higher the potential for catestrophic, and often deadly, failure he exposed himself to. But the grim reality was, in this particular instance, I would actually be endangering myself more by relying too heavily on my own abilities, as - and I hated to admit it - they had deteriorated past the point where I felt confident in my own abilities. From what I could tell, I didn't have much time left. And for that reason, amongst thousands of others, failure was definitely not an option.

I clambered agonizingly up into the Daishi's cockpit, attempting to conceal my presence as best I could from the others present in the gargantuan bay. As I eased into the cockpit, the sophisticated war machine's onboard computer flickered to life.

"Mesomorphic scan complete. Recognize Maxwell, Benjamin E. Proceed with phase two of identification."

"Recognize Maxwell, Benjamin E.," I replied, throwing a series of toggles to activate the machine's integrated electronics and the neurohelmet interface. "To die, to sleep no more; and by a sleep to say we end the heartache and the thousand natural shocks that flesh is heir to."

"Identity confirmed."

"Initiate diganostic mode."

"Diagnostic mode initiated."

"Alright, let's see what this thing can do..."

I climbed into the gargantuan Masakari and placed the NeuroHelmet tightly on my head. An automated voice chimed in.

"Welcome, pilot. Please state your name."

"My... name?"

"Welcome, My name. Would you like to learn the functions of this vehichle?"

"Voice response...

Yes, computer."

The voice went on a flourish about moving the 'mech, and stuff even a civilian knew about a 'mech.

As I teased the throttle foreward, a warning came up on the screen.

"Warning! Automated Voice Tour halted! Would you like to continue?"

"Damn things never work..."

I let out a silent but deadly fart as I tried to get my 'mech to work right. I had drank a lot last night and today I had a hangover. As I kept flipping switches, the smell of my gas started to fill up the cockpit. I coughed and gagged, how it smelled as bad as it did, I did not know. I was glad no one was around as I reached for some Alc-B-Gone ™, which was supposed to clear a hang over.

All of a sudden a huger fart ripped out and the smell was overwhelming. I started gagging and slapping random controls on my dashboard trying to turn the A/C on to kill the smell. My eyes felt like they had been maced and I couldn't see what I was doing. The next thing I knew, the windshield wipers came on. I screamed in angry frustration and pounded more buttons. The holotable came on and weird porn of two fat Russian dudes started playing loudly.

"Aaaagggh!!!! Computer! Turn this thing off!"

"Warning! No match found for COMPUTER TURN THIS THING OFF. Do you want a tour of your 'mech?"

"No I don't, I want to turn off the porn and turn on the air!"

"Wedge, everything okay in there?" somebody asked over the radio. I couldn't make words due to the bad smell, so I just gagged into the microphone while the grunts of two Russian guys transmitted embarrassingly over the radio.

Could I have a TRO of my 'mech?

"Ms. Thastus. What can I do for you?"

The Clanner drifted toward my machine's cockpit in the zero-gravity environment of the 'Mech Bay. As she drew nearer, she narrowed her eyes, and scowled at me.

"Lourde is our lance leader."

"Yes, I know," I replied, glancing back at her, while replacing the focusing lens on one of my war machine's laser emitters. "How do you feel about that?"

"My feelings are irrelevant. He has been appointed a command position. I will treat him with the respect accorded that status."

"You have no feelings on the matter?"

"As I stated: my feelings are irrelevant. However, with that said...he will need to prove himself in battle. He has not yet completed an Operation. His track record is not established."

Thastus paused.

"However, he appears to be viewing pornography instead of reading his mission briefing."

I nodded.

"I'll watch your back out there. It would be good of you to do the same for me."

Thastus tipped her head curtly. As she did so, a klaxon sounded off.

"All crew: prepare for hyperspace jump. Secure your stations and go to condition blue. We will be commencing transition in five minutes."

I had been making the necessary adjustments to my Uziel when the announcement was made. Luckily for me I had just finished adding the Gauss Rifles to the arms, and adding the compents to allow the 'Mech to handle the forces applied from the rifles.

I strapped myself there within the 'Mech Bay not having time to reach some other place. I noticed that some of the other Legionnaires were preparing their 'Mechs and strapping in also. I nodded to Captain Desperado as he strapped in next to his new Sunder directly across from my Uziel. I sighed heavily as I prepared for the jump.

The oblong Longbow, replete with missile launchers where its arms should have been, was ugly. Ass-backwards ugly. It was utterly ungainly-looking, entirely too wide, and appeared for all the world like some kind of alien spacecraft outfit with man-walker legs. To put it bluntly, as flashiness went, it rated a zero. But I really didn't care. The LGB-CS-C Longbow was Crayven Securities, Incorporated's second attempt at a total weapons conversion for the disasterous LGB-7V Longbow. With many military units abandoning their LGB-7Vs in droves, and with the debut of the LGB-12C, the outmoded 7V found itself on the brink of extinction. When StarCorps dropped the price of the LGB-7V to a mere six million C-Bills in an attempt to recoup some of the financial losses sustained in producing what turned out to be a massively unpopular unit, the Crayven Corporation had taken advantage of the situation and purchased twenty of the ill-fated Longbows to be used in the refit program. After nearly a years' worth of research and development, the LGB-CS-C was realized, and the end result was a fire-support BattleMech capable of raining a tremendous amount of death and destruction down on nearly anything stupid enough to get in its crosshairs.

In order to mount an increased loadout, the Longbow's standard gyro was removed, and replaced with a compact model. Quad Diverse Optics ER Medium Lasers were installed in place of the ill-conceived energy package that preceded them, and the Longbow's dual LRM-20 launchers were swapped for a potent mix of Clan LRM launchers, purchased from Clan Diamond Shark, that allowed the LGB-CS-C to bring a staggering ninety missiles to bear in a single volley. Sixteen tons of armor were installed on the Longbow, in addition to a MacArthur II Laser AMS system, designed to afford the Longbow better protection against close-quarters and ranged attacks. An Artemis IV fire-control system was also considered, although it was quickly scrapped when it was discovered that its installation would impede the addition of CASE II, which was essential to the ammunition-carrying sections of the BattleMech. The LGB-CS-C proved so popular as an affordable alternative to the LGB-12C that orders for the design nearly surpassed those of the LGB-7V and LGB-7Q combined.

In other words, I was fortunate to be at the controls of one.

I toggled the Smartlink implant located just left of one of my optic nerves, and felt the muscles in my neck tense slightly as it activated. As IFF signatures splashed across my field of view, I slipped on a pair of control gloves, and powered on the Longbow's neurohelmet. A stab of pain sliced through my cerebellum, the poorly-calibrated interface sending jarring sensations across my cranium. I scowled, and cursed the technicians who should have been alert enough to catch such a problem. Reaching under the command couch, I grabbed a painkiller, and stabbed its autoinjector into my right arm. Ice-cold chemicals poured into my bloodstream, causing the searing sensation to dwindle to a dull throb. Tossing the instrument aside, I pulled the Longbow's safety harnesses on in one fluid motion, and buckled them securely into place. One final throw of a toggle sent the 85-ton assault 'Mech roaring to life, and I keyed in a ready code that notified Lance Commander Lourde that I was go for launch.

I only hope he's as ready as I am.

I looked out through the window into the vast emptiness of space. Staring at my dim reflection in the glass, my mind flickered back to life on Tau Ceti IV. Though I was only there for a brief moment, I felt as if a large portion of myself was blown away along with most of the planet. Now we were returning to the place I once called home. I shuddered to imagine what the place would look like...

“It appears we are on the same lance...” a voice came from behind. I swirled around to see Saburo standing before me. He had a wide grin spread across his face and a look about him that just didn't seem right. Had I not known all the atrocities he had been through, I probably would have avoided him. But I had made a strong connection with Saburo that could only develop because of our blood relation, along with our shared experiences. I ignored the slightly troublesome look and replied with a smile.

“It certainly does!” I gleefully responded. Since my return to the unit, I had barely spoken to Saburo. The events that took place on the Crimson Platform had been lingering in my mind. Though Zhukov was evil, I could still hear his screams reside in my mind at night. I had been putting off speaking to Saburo. I now felt deeply embarrassed that it was not me, but Saburo who had come forward and spoke the first words.

“We'll have to make sure we watch out for each other.” Saburo added as he reached out and tapped me on the shoulder.

“I hope your piloting skills are up to standard.” I jabbed at him jokingly.

“Oh yes, I can assure you I wont foul any shots...”

"All crew: prepare for hyperspace jump. Secure your stations and go to condition blue. We will be commencing transition in five minutes." the PA cut us off.

Not long after, Saburo and I made our way to our stations and prepared for the jump. I relaxed into my seat, fully knowing that whatever would happen on that hell hole, Saburo will be watching my back.

The gentle, unassuming chimes sounded off in the confines of my Daishi's spacious cockpit, indicating that the transition to the hyperspace threshold was only seconds away. I closed my eyes, and steeled myself against the nauseating distortion of spacetime that I knew was impending. A subtle rumble began to reverberate through the Dauntless travelling across the deck plates and up my BattleMech's legs, gradually increasing to a dull roar as the JumpShip we were attached to began tearing a hole in the fabric of the universe. A sudden surge of power almost immediately followed, and a distortion wave rolled across my field of view, the aftereffect of thousands of light-years being traversed in a single moment. I swallowed hard, trying to ignore the bitter, acidic taste of the bile which rose in the back of my throat, focusing instead on the telecommunications traffic which crackled between the JumpShip and the Dauntless.

"M.V. Dauntless, this is Harbor Control. We have achieved exit coordinates. Prepare to disengage."

"Roger that, Harbor Control. Interlocks at standby. We are go for separation on your command."

"Copy, Dauntless. Disengage will commence in thirty seconds. Be advised, you are entering an active combat zone. Standard defensive approach parameters are advised."

"Understood, Harbor Control. Safe journies. Dauntless out."

The chirp of one channel closing also signified the opening of another.

"All stations, prepare for approach and entry."

A flurry of acknowledgements crackled across the comm. In turn, I also acknowledged the traffic, then opened a general channel to the eight other leviathans queued up for deployment in the DropShip's belly.

"Lock and load, gentlemen. We're beginning our descent."

It was never the same. After so many, one would think that a pattern would set in, that at the very least there would be some connecting similarities between each occurrence but no, each was completely unique. This time, the strangest thing happened: I didn’t notice it. I heard the chime and readied my stomach and waited, but seconds passed and there was no sensation of transit disorientation. Hah, perhaps it was better this way; though I didn’t suffer from TDS my stomach never did make it through a jump fully unscathed.

The Templar gave a truly commanding view of the ‘mech bay, towering over most of the other BattleMechs save for Ben’s and its massive canopy allowed me to survey the technicians making last minute check-ups on the war machines. We were still a day out from the planet, but we were going to have to ride suited-up—the ship was sure to take a lot of fire on approach and it would be best if we were doubly protected by ship and BattleMech. Being the largest bay in a DropShip, the BattleMech hanger was often the first place to lose pressure on the ship while it was in combat, and it would be a bad situation if we were prevented from entering our ‘Mechs until we were safely in the atmosphere. Some crews had managed to get the MechWarriors in EVA suits so they could make it through the airless expanse of the bay to their ‘Mechs, but removing a pressure suit inside a cockpit was difficult, and I wasn’t even sure if we had enough for the entire company.

My war machine’s large canopy was a bane as much as a blessing—ferroglass, while the toughest non-opaque material available for modern day warfare, was always a weak point, and all I knew was that if I was fighting myself I would try and put a gauss round right through it.
