"You don't need to worry about that, Mr. Kintaru...I'll see to it personally." I raised my assault rifle, and aimed it directly at Faulkner's head. The Doctor cringed and then smirked at me. "Schuster, I had a feeling you couldn't be trusted."

"You're hardly one to talk. I haven't forgotten about what you and your flunkies did back on New Wessex. I've been itching for some payback. Give me one reason to pull this trigger." I frowned. Faulkner seemed to get the message.

"Very well. You drive a hard bargain. There's an underground landing bay four stories below the prison. It has in it a small single-use escape craft that can get us off the planet. I have access to it. You don't. I can help you get aboard it. Though I don't know what you expect to do after we break orbit. I suppose you've got some heroic plan cooked up."

"Never mind that. How heavily defended is the landing bay?"

"With what's going on outside, the pod is the least of anyone's concerns."

"Then take us there," I barked, jabbing the rifle hard into Faulkner's temple. The doctor grimaced, and gestured toward the doorway.

"Follow me."

Fortunately, the medical wing had a spiraling staircase that dropped directly into the sub-sub-sub-basement, emptying out in the landing bay. We descended fairly quickly, although Benjamin seemed to be moving with increasing difficulty, and the unconscious Kintaru brother slowed us a bit. In short orderwe were aboard, strapped in and facing skyward.

"All right. Here we go." Faulkner announced. With a roar, the windowless pod's engines fired, and we were pushed hard against our seats. The pod shuddered and bucked violently as it ascended through the complex, its velocity evening out as we broke into the atmosphere. Mere minutes later, the crush of gravity had given way to weightlessness as the pod found its way into orbit. After sveral long moments of silence, Faulkner spoke.

"Well, this is it. I hope you're satisfied. Now what?"

"This thing must have an emergency beacon, Faulkner. Activate it - now."

"Be of service to me Edward? I have a feeling that it shall always be I who is in your service. But if you could help us recover whatever is left of the Legionnaires back on Sheratan without being detected by the Crayven corporation, that would be much appreciated. I don't understand the workings of your quantum drive, but are you ready to face Crayven Colonel? They surely aren't going to miss the Astrid coming into the system. And we're going to need to land our Overlord on Sheratan without them being suspicious somehow. You could always take us to an adjacent system where your ship can be refitted with conventional drives, and we could hitch a ride on a commercial jump ship."

I raised an eyebrow at Garland's use of my middle name - 'Edward' - as opposed to my given name - 'Charles' - but hearing someone address me by something other than a title for the first time in a decade was refreshing in and of itself, and as such, I paid it little mind.

"Captain - my resources are at your disposal. However, I submit that it would be best to consider a stopping-off point - perhaps Galatea - before we attempt to enter the Sheratan system. There's simply no way of knowing what sort of madness Saxon might have arranged for us. While I appreciate the gallant rescue, Colonel," I nodded to Reese, "you can rest assured that such a brazen maneuver has tipped them off to the fact that we're still alive. Better for us to prepare for the worst as opposed to going in expecting the best. There are some tech dealers planetside on Galatea who might be able to arrange for a few pieces of BattleTech hardware, and there's at least one propulsion specialist I know of who's connected to a salvager in the Draconis Combine. There may be a K-F drive in the works for the Astrid through him. Either way, not even the Crayven Corporation would be so brazen as to mount an attack on us at Galatea - so we'll be...relatively...protected."

I glanced at Reese, and then back toward Garland.

"It's up to you, Captain. Where do you want to go?"

While Maxwell and Garland discussed the best route to take with our one remaining quantum jump, my comm unit chirped, and I quietly excused myself from the proceedings to answer it.

"Reese. Go ahead."

The unit cycled momentarily, before a reply crackled from its integrated speaker.

"Colonel, we're tracking a pod on an escape trajectory from the surface of Kittery. It's transmitting a distress beacon. We've plotted its course - indications are that it was launched from the prison camp."

More escapees, likely...

"Very well. This goes against my better judgement - move the Astrid onto an intercept course with that pod. As soon as we're within range, bring it aboard, and notify me of your findings."

"Yes, Colonel."

You will never find a more wretched hive of scum and villainy…

"Galatea, yes, with Outreach gone I guess that's all that us mercenaries have left. I hope it's improved since last I was there—it's a rough place, even for the likes of us."

The Colonel excused herself quietly, attending to some important mater on the bridge. "We need to get a transmission to our people on Sheratan, quietly. Could you arrange for an HPG transmission that would somehow get past whatever sentinel software Crayven has operating there?"

"Certainly Captain," Charles said, indicating it would be mere child's play. "there is still one more thing which we need to take care of though."

Turning to face the porthole, Charles pointed at the massive red hand covering an entire side of the ship.

Thirty minutes later...

"Colonel, the Legionnaires' Overlord has been prepped for transport. Also, the escape pod has been brought aboard."

I nodded.

"Excellent. Was there anyone aboard?"

"There were six persons aboard. A...Kei-teh Kintaru, his brother Saburo, and Mr. Samuel Grisham - all Legionnaires. Accompanying them were Nicholas Schuster of the LIC, and a 'Doctor Faulkner' - he refused to give his first name but identified himself as a civillian scientist. Also, Colonel,"

The Operations Manager's voice trailed off.

"Yes?"

"Colonel, Benjamin Maxwell was aboard. Alive."

I tipped my head in acknowledgement.

"Very well. I believe our business here is concluded. If no one has any objections," I continued, glancing around the bridge for effect, "then I submit we take our leave of this godforsaken star system."

A round of nodded heads followed my statement.

"Helm - lay in a course for Galatea - and engage at your earliest discretion."
